JALPAIGURI/KOLKATA: A MiG-27 fighter plane crashed in Changpara village near Alipurduar town on Friday, killing two people on the ground and razing eight houses. The pilot stayed with the plane until he cleared heavily populated areas before ejecting, say IAF sources.
Changpara residents are used to the noise of MiG-27s flying overhead after taking off from Air Force Station Hashimara. Around 8,30pm on Friday, villagers saw a "ball of fire" hurtling towards the village and scattered in panic. Two of them couldn't get out of the way.

"A court of inquiry will reveal the facts," an officer said. "It seems he lost control of the aircraft over Alipurduar town but managed to steer it away to a less populated area before baling out at the last possible moment. Had he waited any further, he wouldn't have made it. The villagers will be compensated as per rules." |
