India’s helping hand
Published April 8, 2015 | By admin
SOURCE: TRIBUNE INDIA

A decade ago none would have believed that the US of all countries would ask its citizens to avail of India’s offer to rescue them from a region hit by civil war. The Indian offer is not just an acknowledgment of its burgeoning strategic transportation capability which is still a fraction of American prowess. It is also a tribute to New Delhi’s diplomatic acumen and perception of being a benign state that enabled it to assist America in evacuating its people from Yemen. Washington had to close its embassy in Sana’a whereas India pulled the right strings for its warships to sail into ports being contested by armed partisans and planes to land on a damaged airstrip.

As of now 26 countries, as diverse as Cuba, Indonesia and the Netherlands, have requested India to help their citizens caught in the civil war between the Houthis of Yemen and a 10-nation alliance that wants to see the President of Yemen, now in asylum in Riyadh, back in Sana’a. Thanks to the social media, the current Indian endeavour to evacuate its citizens is being projected as the first-ever effort in this direction. For the record, the biggest-ever repatriation was of 1.75 lakh Indians from Iraq in 1990-91.

But it required a dharna by MPs from Kerala in front of Parliament House to goad the government into action. Over the past 15 years, Iraq was followed by operations in other countries but Yemen will rank as the smoothest-ever evacuation. This was due to the efforts by successive governments to modernise India’s defence services after the Kargil war. The Navy now operates on anti-piracy missions near the troubled North Africa-West Asia region and the venerable IL-76 has been supplemented by American C-17 and C-130 J military transport aircraft. Apart from India’s profile that makes the presence of its ships and aircraft acceptable in a civil war, frequent simulation of disaster preparedness and Air India’s unquestioning participation has provided the expanding diaspora confidence in the ability of the Indian state to help them in times of distress.

Not just Indians, rescuing foreign nationals from Yemen too, assures Manohar Parrikar
Published April 8, 2015 | By admin
SOURCE : CNN-IBN

The total number of Indians evacuated from conflict ridden country, Yemen, has touched 4,000 with nearly 700 more nationals evacuated in three air sorties on Tuesday.

India has accepted Pakistan’s offer to fly 11 Indians evacuated by a Pakistani naval ship from Yemen. The Indians, who were taken out of Al Mukallah on Saturday by Pakistan Navy’s Aslat along with 171 Pakistanis, are now in Karachi and will be flown to New Delhi on Wednesday by the special plane following Nawaz Sharif’s gesture.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said government is trying to rescue citizens of other countries as well. “4,000 people evacuated so far from Yemen. We will bring back citizens of other countries as well,” Parrikar said.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for External Affairs General VK Singh has stirred controversy in Yemen. Singh who is overseeing evacuation operations in Yemen said the process is less exciting than going to the Pakistan Embassy. Singh made the statement while briefing the media on the evacuation status.

“This job isn’t as exciting as going to the Pakistan High Commission,” Singh had said.

But despite the jibes, Singh continues to oversee the rescue operations at Djibouti where he addressed the evacuees from Yemen’s capital Sanaa.

“Along with our own we evacuated 90 plus foreign nationals,” he tweeted.

Yemen has been witnessing fierce battle between Saudi-led coalition and Shiite rebels, who have battled their way into various cities Yemen including in the former stronghold of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi who has fled overseas.

India Emerges Hero Of Massive Yemen Rescue Operation

India on Wednesday will wrap up Operation Raahat, a massive evacuation exercise, amid global praise for the timely, brave and highly precise rescue of nearly 4000 nationals from volatile Yemen where a Saudi-led air campaign against Shi’ite Houthi fighters has left hundreds dead and injured.

The last batch of Indian nationals aboard an Indian Air Force craft is due to reach Mumbai today, according to reports.

“We will plan to end air evacuation efforts from Sana’a on April 8 and all those who want to leave should do so by Wednesday,” Hindustan Times quoted external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin as saying.

The government’s efforts to pull, not just its own citizens, but also 232 persons from 26 countries from the strife-torn region, has been appreciated globally.

On Monday, more than 1,000 people were evacuated and India has been asked by 26 nations to help get their citizens out of the conflict zone.

An advisory on the website of the US embassy in Yemen asked its nationals to contact First Secretary Raj Kopal at the Indian Embassy in Sana’a.

“There are no plans for a U.S. government-coordinated evacuation of U.S. citizens at this time. If you wish to depart Yemen, you should stay alert for other opportunities to leave the country,” the advisory stated.

The Indian Navy’s INS Tarkash, carrying 74 people, will reach Djibouti from Al Hodeidah today and the INS Sumitra will reach Al Hodeidah, reported NDTV. The Indian government has asked all those who wished to leave to reach the Yemeni capital to take the last Air India flight out of the war zone, the report stated.

Evacuees from Yemen, including residents of foreign countries, have thanked the Indian government.

“Everything was so easy for me even though I am a Yemeni. I want to thank the Indian government for making this happen,” ANI quoted Sana, an evacuee from Yemen as saying.

“We appreciate this a lot, cannot thank the Indian Government enough to get us out of Yemen,” said another evacuee from Northern Ireland. Bangladeshi evacuees also lauded Air India for its immense contribution in the evacuation process.

“Air India did a fantastic job. Air India is taking care of not only Indians but other nationals too, great job. The Indian government saved our lives and we will remember this throughout our life,” said a Bangladeshi evacuee. Three Air India flights flew 574 passengers out of Yemen’s Sana’a, while INS Mumbai evacuated 474 from Al Hudaydah port yesterday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday lauded the defence officials and all other government organisations, which contributed to the rescue work.

Union external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj has been leading the rescue efforts with union minister VK Singh, a former army chief. Singh has been coordinating evacuation operations from Sa’naa in Yemen and Djibouti.

“My assessment is that out of all those who want to leave Yemen, I don’t think more than 200-300 are left,” said Gen Singh.A Pakistani navy ship carrying 11 Indians along with Pakistanis from Yemen arrived at Karachi yesterday, following which Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif offered a special plane to carry them home. Germany’s Ambassador in New Delhi Michael Steiner also thanked India after Indian security forces helped rescue its stranded nationals.
