Tejas tests Indian-made EW suite

A Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) Tejas Mk1 light combat aircraft (LCA) has flown for the first time with an Indian-developed electronic warfare (EW) suite and a radar warning receiver (RWR).

The equipment was produced by India’s Defence Avionics Research Establishment (DARE), and was able to detect radar signals during the flight, says the country's defence ministry in a statement.

The EW suite also carries a radar jammer, which the ministry says allows the pilot to “jam” various radar frequency bands.

The statement adds that it is the first time an indigenously produced aircraft has been fitted with both a jammer and RWR that benefit from a unified EW system.

“Over the coming few months, [the Aeronautical Development Agency] and DARE will be scheduling further sorties to evaluate the system in various signal scenarios.”

The aircraft to be used in testing the system is prototype vehicle 1 (PV-1).

The standard Tejas aircraft is equipped with an EW suite produced by Israeli firm Elisra, a unit of Elbit Systems.
