　　The Vietnam People's Navy (VPN) was mature in the War against the US (commonly known as Vietnam War). They made their name when 3 small torpedo boats intercepted and succeeded in driving the USS Maddox (DD-731) out of North Vietnamese territorial waters on August 2nd, 1964. During the war, the VPN shot down dozens of aircrafts, sank or set on fire hundreds of warships and transport ships. After 60 years of building and strengthening, the VPN is the main force in protecting the Vietnamese territorial waters, coastal lines and islands. The VPN is being completely modernized to cope with the modern warfare. The modern force of VPN includes:

　　1. Project 1241 missile boats

　　This is the first class of modern warship of the VPN. These are high speed missile boats, with displacement up to 550 tons and speed up to 42 knots (78km/h). Each boat carries 4 P-15M anti-ship missiles (80km range and 513kg warhead, 1241.RE variant) or 16 Kh-35E sea-skimming missiles (130/260km range and 145kg warhead, 1241.8 variant). These ships only have limited anti-air capability, with 2 AK-630M 30mm CIWS, a single forward AK-176M 76.2mm naval gun and some MANPADs. But, with high speed and an arsenal of anti-ship missiles, these ships pose a great threat to the enemy during a conflict.

　　These frigates are the most modern surface combatant of the VPN. The two frigates use a modernized variant of Project 11661E frigate with stealth capability.

　　Each ship has the displacement of 2100 tons. These frigates are designed to engage and destroy enemy surface ships and air threats, as well as patrol or escort other ships during combat or in the exclusive economic zone. The Gepard 3.9 frigate is armed with modern radars and tactical combat and command systems. The ship main armament is 8 Kh-35E anti-ship missles and a Ka-28 ASW helicopter. For defensive role, each ship has a forward Palma missile-gun system (an export version of the Russian Kashtan system) and 2 aft AK-630M 30mm CIWS. In 2013, Vietnam signed another deal to purchase two more ships with better ASW and anti-air capability.

　　In 2009, Vietnam ordered 6 modernized Project 636.3MV submarines (NATO codename: Improved Kilo). This class consists of modern diesel-electric submarines and being one of the most silent class of submarines in the world. Vietnam received and commissioned the first two subs in 2014 and will receive the remaining four in 2014 and 2015.

　　Vietnam People's Navy's engineers and designers built the TT-400TP locally, based on preliminary drawings of a foreign country with modern technology. Through this success, Z-173 shipyard has built a complete set of technical documents for TT-400TP class gun boat. The name "TT-400TP" is abbreviated by Vietnamese words: TT is Tuần Tra (Patrol), 400 is over 400 tons, TP is Tàu Pháo (gunboat). This class is built for patrol missions, protecting a flotilla, surveillance and destroy enemy landing crafts.
　　越南人民海军的工程师和设计师建立了tt-400tp局部，基于现代技术与国外初步图纸。通过这一成功，z-173造船厂建立了一套完整的tt-400吨炮艇的技术文件。名称“tt-400tp”的简称，越南的话：这是涂ầN TRA（巡逻），400超过400吨，TP是àU pHáO（炮艇）。这个类是建立执行巡逻任务，保护舰队，监控并摧毁敌人的登陆艇。

　　Each ship has 480 tons displacement, speed up to 32 knots and 2500 nautical miles range. The ship can operate in sea state 5. Each ship has a forward AK-176M naval gun, an aft AK-630M CIWS, MANPADs mount for Igla-S missles and 2 14.5mm KPVT machine gun.

　　6.Coastal missile systems

　　The coastal missile systems are used to defend the coastline against enemy offensive operations. In the late 90s and early 2000s, Vietnam only has several 4K51 Rubezh (80km range) and 4K44 Redut (450km range) coastal missile systems. These systems use older missiles with high cruising altitude, which makes them an easy target for intercepting.

　　To boost the defensive capability, the VPN now has much more modern missile systems. These includes the K-300P Bastion-P (300km range), Bal-E (130/260km range) and allegedly Klub-K (300km range).

　　Naval Aviation is not a new branch of the VPN. They previously operated the Kamov Ka-25 ASW helicopter and Beriev Be-12 amphibious aircraft. Todays, the Naval Aviation backbone is the 954th Naval Aviation Brigade. The 954th currently operates Ka-28 ASW helicopters, Mi-8/17 transport helicopters, EC-225 Super Puma and DHC-6 maritime patrol aircraft.

　　In the future, Vietnam will sign more deals to purchase or receive the technology to build heavy frigates (3000 tons or bigger) with better capabilities. The goal is to build a modern, 21st century naval force, to protect and defend the Vietnamese territorial waters.
