Defence minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday said that Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has started a feasibility study to set up a helicopter manufacturing unit in Goa.
Parrikar told mediapersons at his Goa office that the preliminary report will consist of what HAL would like to set up in Goa. HAL has three options to set up a unit in Goa, which includes manufacturing of helicopters, a repair and overhauling facility and component integration. “They have to decided and come to the defence ministry,” Parrikar added.
He also said that he has asked them work as soon as possible as there are some restrains. “They must have started the feasibility study and I’ll ask them to speed it up,” he said, adding that such things do not happen overnight as it is a huge commitment.
In March, Parrikar had asked HAL to put “a business plan” before the defence ministry for the purpose. If set up, it could be the country’s second helicopter manufacturing unit.
In February, at the Goa Investment Summit 2015, Parrikar had expressed interest in setting up a helicopter manufacturing unit in the state.
Setting up defence-related projects in the state has been emphasized in the Goa investment policy which was finalized by Parrikar when he was chief minister.
Parrikar had also said that according to a study carried out, Goa was found to be a suitable place for a helicopter manufacturing unit.
Recently, the defence minister had cleared the construction of eight minesweeper ships at the Goa shipyard limited (GSL) at an estimated cost of 32,000 crore.
